Karlstad Sweden

Karlstad is located halfway between Oslo and Stockholm on the northern shore of Lake Vänern in the county of Värmland. Known as the sun city of Sweden, Karlstad has adopted the sun as its symbol, representing the hospitality of its residents and illustrating the warm-hearted nature of the city. The River Klarälven flows through Karlstad before reaching Lake Vänern. The old Stone Bridge, Sweden's longest stone arch bridge, spans the eastern branch of the river. The large and airy market square, Stora Torget, is the heart of the city center. Here, you can visit the Neoclassical Rådhuset, the town hall, and the Peace Monument, which commemorates the peaceful dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway. Just east of the market square is Karlstad Cathedral, easily recognizable by its tower visible throughout the central city. Inside, you can admire the altar made from Gotland limestone with a cross of Orrefors crystal, and the organ. Next to Karlstad Cathedral is a memorial stone dedicated to the sailors from Värmland who lost their lives at sea during World War II. Opposite the cathedral is the Karlstad School Museum, which houses a large collection of school objects, educational materials from the mid-19th century, and school uniforms. One of Karlstad's major tourist attractions is the Värmland Museum, located at the corner where the Klarälven River splits. The museum features a dozen permanent exhibits that guide visitors through the history of Värmland. "Sola i Kallsta," meaning "the sun in Karlstad," is a popular local expression referring to a cheerful and friendly servant girl who lived in Karlstad in the 17th century. A sculpture of her stands outside the Stadshotellet and Bishop's Arms pub. Karlstad is a pleasant, beautiful, and friendly city, and the surrounding Värmland offers a natural treasure: Tiveden National Park. There, you will find swamps, glacial forests, and paths along lakes that reflect the stunning skies, making the trip truly worthwhile.
